Wait what did I come into this thread for again? Oh yeah, ADHD!

Re: Wait what did I come into this thread for again? Oh yeah, ADHD!

interesting, @Jynx  I hadn't thought of that difference (and similarity) between hyperfocus on a particular activity, and hyperfixation on an area of interest.

@Jynx @Shaz51 never really thought about the difference, that's interesting to know. Always love learning about ND.

Re: Wait what did I come into this thread for again? Oh yeah, ADHD!

@Shaz51 my experience with hyperfixations has been pretty extensive! Most of the time I think it's a good thing - it's a very deep passion for something I enjoy. Getting hyperfixated on a tv show or a game, or finding a new craft/hobby to invest time into, can be an exciting process of discovery.

Buuuut it can totally be really challenging too. It's an ongoing joke/common experience in the ADHD community to get hyperfixated on something (e.g. learning the guitar) and then start making impulsive decisions to increase engagement with the hyperfixation (e.g. buying a guitar and twenty new guitar music books), only to find that after a month or so, the hyperfixation has lost its sparkle and now we're left cleaning up the mess (trying to desperately sell guitar books on ebay 🤣).

It can also effect other things in life, like if you're neglecting your relationships or your responsibilities. So it can indeed be tricky to navigate, especially cos (at least for me) hyperfixations are fuelled by excitement, and the idea of slowing down or exercising restraint feels really bad. Having to be wary of impulsive behaviours or trying to maintain a semblence of balance can be super challenging.

@Jynx ever have those urgent urges to research into something on google because you’re all of a sudden interested in something? It’s like your brain can’t do anything until you google it
