@SmilingGecko it has low, medium and high, is reverse cycle and sounds like an F16 when it starts up.
No doubt it's not efficient, my electricity bill tells me as much when it arrives.
I have no money to replace it with a newer one so it only gets used sparingly. Not ideal but not something I thought I'd have to worry about when I bought the house 25 years ago. I dread summer.

@ENKELI Yes summer isn't necessarily your friend.
They have subsidised aircon in my state of Victoria. Don't know if your state has a similar government scheme.
Its pretty much open to anyone who does not have a high income or is on a government allowance. Its how I bought mine.
Now I have to buy a power generator so I'm not left without power in the case of a blackout. They offer finance over 60 months or something so its doable.
i'm just back from a walk and its very humid out there for only 20 degrees!

@SmilingGecko no there is no AC rebate in WA. I had always planned to upgrade the air con but it's just never been affordable. Maybe I should have spent the money on the air con instead of spending 3 months in North America....nah, I don't regret that trip!!
I do have a genny though, my brother bought it many years back and it came in handy when Western Power cut my power off in error and took 6 days to reconnect it. I'd paid the bill and by the time I got through to the call centre to advise my power had been disconnected. Being a Thursday which is the day they normally disconnect for non-payment I found out, I was told it would take 2 business days to be restored. Western Power were not at fault, they had to contact Horizon who had the authority to disconnect and restore. My brother said words to the effect of "bugger this for a game of soldiers" and went out and bought a generator. It's come in handy for when there has been outages lasting several hours to keep the fridges running.
I'm just grateful mum has decent air con in her house, she's 80 and doesn't deal with the heat well either.
Humidity sucks doesn't it. Going through the 'pause is bad enough but the hot flushes really ramp up in summer and once it gets over 30 I start dripping. I hope you manage to stay comfortable and the humidity drops for you x
